Self-Care Sunday: Cozy Mystery Vibes
There’s a particular kind of afternoon that only happens in fall β the light goes gold a little earlier, the air finally has some bite to it, and every instinct you have says slow down. Somewhere there’s a mug going cold because you got too wrapped up in a chapter to notice. A candle’s burning low on the side table. Maybe something’s in the oven, filling the house with cinnamon and spice.
That’s the whole mood we’re chasing today. No task, no checklist β just permission to build yourself a little cozy mystery afternoon: something to read, something to set the mood, and something to bake.
π Something to Read
If your reading pile needs a refresh, here’s where to start building your cozy mystery books for fall TBR:
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman β four retirees in a quiet retirement village take on cold cases for fun. Funny, warm, and impossible to put down.

The Maid by Nita Prose β a hotel maid with a sharp eye for detail becomes the prime suspect in a guest’s murder. Cozy with a twist of heart.
How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin β a young writer is summoned to her eccentric great-aunt’s estate to untangle a decades-old prediction about her own death. Twisty, small-town, very Agatha Christie.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano β a struggling novelist is mistaken for a hitwoman. Murder, humor, and chaos in equal measure.

An Enchanting Case of Spirits by Melissa Holtz β a birthday tarot reading goes sideways and suddenly there’s a ghost with unfinished business. Cozy mystery with a paranormal, perfectly autumn twist.

Pick one, pick them all, or just save this list for the next time you need a cozy read.
π―οΈ Something to Set the Mood
Light a candle while you dive in and it’s instant autumn β that soft crackling wooden-wick sound, like a tiny fireplace running in the background while you read.

π Something to Bake
And because a cozy afternoon deserves something in the oven, too β this is the very first thing I bake every fall, and the last thing I bake when spring starts creeping in:
Cori’s Family Famous Pumpkin Bread (not to be confused with “world famous”, but still pretty good)
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp + 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1Β½ tsp salt
- 3 cups granulated sugar
- 1 can (15 oz) 100% pure pumpkin
- 4 eggs
- ΒΎ cup vegetable oil
- Β½ cup orange juice
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350Β°F. Grease and flour five 5Γ3-inch mini loaf pans.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, and salt.
- In another large bowl, combine sugar, pumpkin, eggs, oil, and orange juice. Beat until just blended.
- Add the pumpkin mixture to the flour mixture and stir gently until just moistened. (If using a mixer, fold the batter by hand at the end β the oil has a sneaky way of pooling at the bottom.)
- Spoon batter into the prepared pans.
- Bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool in pans on wire racks for 10 minutes, then remove loaves and cool completely.
π‘ Extra indulgence tip: add chocolate chips β measured with your heart β for a cozy, sweet twist that never lasts long in my house.
Today isn’t about doing. It’s about slowing down for an hour before the week picks back up.
