Every year I tell myself I’m going to spend a whole Saturday decorating for spooky season, and every year that Saturday doesn’t exist. So this year, we’re doing it differently β in sprints. Ten minutes here, twenty minutes there, and somehow the whole house feels like October without ever blocking off a big chunk of time.
Building on the time-budget idea from our fall baking plan β matching the task to the time you’ve actually got instead of an idealized weekend β here’s how to sprint your way through spooky season decorating.
10-Minute Spooky Season Decorating Sprints (Do This Today)
These are the fastest wins β the kind you can do while dinner’s in the oven:
- Set a pumpkin (or three) on the porch
- Swap one throw pillow cover for a Halloween or fall print
- Light a spiced candle and set it somewhere visible
- Hang a single window cling or two
- Drape a black or orange blanket over the back of the couch
Pick one, set a timer, and stop when it goes off. That’s the whole point of a sprint β you’re not trying to finish the whole house in one sitting.
20-30 Minute Sprints (This Weekend, No Big Deal)
A little more time gets you a little more payoff:
- Style your mantel with a few Halloween or fall accents
- Hang a wreath on the front door
- Set up a Halloween coffee bar sign in the kitchen
- Build one small vignette β a side table or entryway console with 3-4 grouped items (mini pumpkins, a lantern, a candle)
You don’t need to do all four. Pick the one space that gets the most eyes β your entryway or your kitchen counter β and give that one 20-30 minutes of attention.
The One Bigger Project (Do It With the Kids)
If you’ve got an hour and some help, this is the sprint worth saving for a family activity instead of solo decorating:
- DIY paper bats, ghosts, or pumpkins taped up around the house
- A “spooky but not scary” corner with glow sticks, candles, or plastic spiders for younger kids
- Window clings the kids place themselves
This one’s less about the finished look and more about the time together β the decorating is really just an excuse.
Before You Buy Anything β Shop Your Own Boxes First
Before any sprint, it’s worth pulling out last year’s dΓ©cor box and doing a fast sort: what still works, what you’re over, what’s worth setting aside. Layering Halloween accents over decor you already have (pumpkins, gourds, leaves, pinecones from outside) costs nothing and usually looks more put-together than starting from scratch anyway.
Today’s To-Do’s
- Set a timer for one 10-minute sprint and do it right now
- Pick one space (entryway, mantel, or kitchen) for a 20-30 minute sprint this weekend
- If the kids are around, save one DIY project for a together-activity, not a solo task
You don’t need the whole house transformed by tonight. You need one sprint, done. The rest can happen in pieces over the next couple of weeks.
