Self-Care Sunday: Dust Off an Old Hobby (Cozy Hobbies for Colder Days)

Cozy hobbies illustration of a vintage armchair with a basket of yarn, an embroidery hoop, watercolors, and tea beside a rainy autumn window, titled Self-Care Sunday: Dust Off an Old Hobby.

Have you noticed it? The mornings are darker, the furnace kicked on for the first time, and the porch is suddenly way less appealing after 5 p.m. We’re heading into the season where we spend a whole lot more time inside.

And honestly? That’s kind of the best part. Because more time inside means more time for the things that make us feel like us. Not mom-us or work-us or holiday-planner-us. Just us.

So this Self-Care Sunday, let’s go find that thing you used to love doing. You know the one. It’s probably sitting in a bin in the closet right now.

Why an Old Hobby (and Not a New To-Do)

Here’s what I love about picking an old hobby back up: you already know you like it. There’s no pressure to be good at it, no research rabbit hole, and usually no big shopping trip. You just pick up where you left off.

And in the middle of a season full of lists and plans and everyone else’s needs, having one thing that’s just for fun matters. It doesn’t have to produce anything, and you don’t need to post about it. It just has to feel good.

Can’t Remember What You Used to Love? Start Here

If it’s been a while (no judgment, it’s been a while for most of us), try these questions:

  • What did you love doing when you were 12?
  • What did you do on snow days before phones existed?
  • What’s hiding in your closet, garage, or craft bin that you haven’t touched in years?
  • What did you always say you’d “get back into someday”?
  • What makes you lose track of time, in a good way?

Whatever pops into your head first is usually the answer.

Cozy Hobbies to Dust Off This Season

Need a little inspiration? These cozy hobbies are perfect for colder days indoors:

🧶 With Your Hands

  • Knitting or crochet: Start with a simple scarf or a dishcloth. Bonus: handmade gifts.
  • Embroidery or cross-stitch: Small, portable, and so relaxing while you watch TV.
  • Sewing or quilting: If the machine’s been collecting dust, start with a pillowcase or a simple table runner.

🎨 Something Creative

  • Watercolor or sketching: All you need is a pad, a brush, and 20 minutes.
  • Scrapbooking or photo albums: Finally do something with the 4,000 photos on your phone.
  • Journaling or writing: A notebook and a warm drink. That’s it.

🧩 Quiet and Cozy

  • Jigsaw puzzles: Leave one out on the table all season and let everyone add a piece.
  • Reading: Rejoin the land of “just one more chapter.”
  • Houseplants: Repot, propagate, and bring a little green inside for winter.

🍞 In the Kitchen

  • Bread baking: Few things are cozier than a loaf in the oven on a cold afternoon.
  • Trying one new recipe a week: Pull out that cookbook you bought and never opened.

🎹 Make Some Noise

  • Piano, guitar, or ukulele: Even 10 minutes of playing counts. Your fingers will remember more than you think.

How to Actually Make Time for It

The hard part isn’t picking a hobby. It’s actually doing it. A few things that help:

  • Start with 20 minutes. Not a whole Saturday. Just 20 minutes on the couch tonight.
  • Leave it out. If the yarn is in a bin in the closet, you won’t knit. If it’s in a basket by your chair, you will.
  • Use what you have first. Dig out your old supplies before you buy anything new. You might be surprised what’s in there.
  • Pair it with something cozy. A candle, a cup of tea, a favorite show in the background. Make it something you look forward to.
  • Let it be imperfect. Wonky stitches and lopsided bread count. The point is how it feels, not how it looks.

Need a Few Supplies to Get Started?

If your old supplies have gone missing (or the yarn has seen better days), I put together a list of my favorite beginner-friendly cozy hobby starter kits. Everything you need to get going, without buying out the whole craft store.

Your Self-Care Sunday

  • Pick one old hobby you’d love to pick back up
  • Dig out your supplies (or make a short list of what you need)
  • Set them somewhere you’ll actually see them
  • Give yourself 20 minutes with it today, just for fun

The holidays will still be there tomorrow. Today, do something that’s just for you. 🧶🍂
